Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz hosted the annual Back to School/Stay in School rally, organized by the Borough President's Office, the Brooklyn Branch of the NAACP , and the New York City Department of Education .

At least 2,000 free backpacks, containing essential school supplies , will be distributed to the city's neediest public school students , including those from foster homes, shelters and juvenile detention centers.

“As a product of the New York City public schools system, I know the great value of a solid education in preparing students to become our nation's future leaders. After all — Brooklyn today is America tomorrow. I commend the NAACP and I am proud to once again support its Back to School/Stay in School Program, which provides valuable tools to help reduce educational disparities and ensure that all of our students reach the zenith of their God-given potential.”

Joining Markowitz at the event were Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, Congressman Ed Towns, NAACP New York State Conference President Hazel Dukes, and Brooklyn NAACP President Karen Boykin-Towns.
