Crystal Bobb-Semple has been at the forefront of literacy and educational equity in Central Brooklyn for the last fifteen years. As the former owner of the well-loved and much-missed Brownstone Books, she took on the challenge of creating a space for literature in Bedford-Stuyvesant and from 2000-2010 her store hosted hundreds of authors, countless hours of story time and supported aspiring writers through monthly poetry slams and writer's groups.
Her current company, Plato Learning, is an after-school and summer literacy organization that has served over 3,000 families since 2010. Her company’s goal is to transform the landscape and conversation around literacy education. Mrs. Bobb-Semple holds a B.S. in Economics from Hampton University, an MPA from the University of Delaware and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.
Crystal serves on the boards of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation and is also a founding member of the Brooklyn Brownstone School and Stuyvesant Heights Parents Association. Crystal resides in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.
