It is universally acknowledged that education is one of the most effective strategies for the empowerment of individuals and families, and is one of the NAACP's 10 strategic priorities. The Education Committee of the Brooklyn Branch is committed in its work to support and promote equality of educational opportunities for people of color and other minority groups. The committee is tireless in its advocacy for effective, accountable and accessible public school systems, and for adequate and equitable school funding. The support for and promotion of teacher certification, and the active involvement of parents in the education of their children are important dimensions of the committee’s work.

In addition, the Education Committee advocates for fulfillment of the nation’s commitment to quality, integrated public education as set forth in the landmark decision of Brown v. The Board of Education.

"Education is the great civil rights struggle of the 21st-century , so
it makes perfect sense that the NAACP Brooklyn Branch is taking a leading role in helping to ensure that more students are prepared for school so they can achieve their full potential," Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein said. "We thank the NAACP Brooklyn Branch for organizing the Back to School/Stay in School program, which will help students get off to a great start when they head back to school in September."

--NYC Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein
