Judge Rules NYPD's 'Stop-And-Frisk' Unconstitutional

In a 195-page decision issued this morning, the judge, Shira A. Scheindlin, ruled that the NYPD's stop-and-frisk policy is unconstitutional and appointed an independent monitor to ensure that the NYPD carries out stop-and-frisks in accordance with the US constitution.

Action Alert: Community Safety Act

THE ISSUE

Last month the New York City Council passed a pair of bills within the Community Safety Act that would provide oversight of the NYPD by creating an independent inspector general for the Police Department (Intro 1079) and protecting New Yorker's against racial profiling and discrimination by the NYPD (Intro 1080). Mayor Bloomberg, who has been adamantly opposed to police reform, threatened to veto the legislation and yesterday he did just that.
