Ms James worked as a teacher, guidance counselor and administrator in the NYCDOE.
Ms James continues to serve the New York City Public Schools through the NAACP Brooklyn Branch, L.E.A.D ., Leadership, Achievement, Education, Direction , Mentoring Program in selected elementary, middle schools and high schools. She coordinates the annual NAACP Brooklyn Branch Back to School/Stay in School Program, designed to help provide children with critical academic and social supports, that distributes free backpacks with essential school supplies to hundreds of New York City public school students .
Ms James is also working with the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice , Brooklyn Crossroads Juvenile Center . She has implemented a tutoring and mentoring program at the center and provides donated books to the centers' library.
Ms. James supports and promotes the tenets of the NAACP to eliminate educational disparities and promote educational excellence.
